DSL, which is short for digital subscriber line, is high-speed Internet service that operates over standard telephone lines. DSL is often cheaper than other high-speed services, including those with cable and fiber optic connections. Leading companies offer DSL services in most parts of the country. These companies include AT&T;, Cavtel, EarthLink and NetZero.
AT&T;
AT&T;'s DSL service requires customers to have an existing AT&T; land line. A wireless gateway, which is AT&T;'s modem, is included with service at no extra cost. AT&T; Internet Security Suite powered by McAfee is provided to customers, as well as online photo and video storage. Service operates at speeds of up to 3 megabytes per second.
Cavalier Telephone LLC
Cavalier Telephone, known as Cavtel, offers DSL service that comes with a Wi-Fi modem. The service runs at up to 8 megabytes per second and comes with three email address, Net Guardian Internet security software suite and Net Medic, an Internet connection diagnosis software.
EarthLink
EarthLink DSL operates at speeds up to 6 megabytes per second, which is 100 times faster than dial-up service. Service includes 24 hour support and 20 hours per month of free access to dial-up service away from your home. A high speed modem is included with the purchase of DSL service.
NetZero
NetZero's DSL service also includes the necessary modem, supplied at no extra cost. Included with DSL service is Norton AntiVirus security software, email and spyware protection, and live 24 hours a day support.
