AT&T; is one of the nation's largest providers of cellular and broadband service. The company also offers a DSL broadband service. The company's basic DSL package provides an Internet connection through a standard phone line that is about 10 times faster than the speed of standard dial-up Internet. The DSL service also comes with custom e-mail addresses and the ability to host a web page through the company's servers.
Cable vs. DSL
Cable modems offer Internet service through a shared cable. This type of system allows more than one user to share a single connection point. This can slow down the service when more than one user is on the connection. The advantage of AT&T;'s DSL service is that it provides a dedicated line to each user. This creates a consistent connection speed based on your access plan.
AT&T; Billing and Customer Service
AT&T; begins to bill DSL customers the first day that the service is turned on. DSL billing begins on the 25th of each month. Bills arrive at your house up to 10 days later. The customer service line for billing questions is 800-235-7524. In the event of an outage, call DSL Customer Care at 877-937-5288. If you report an outage, you may request a credit on your bill for the delay.
Speed
AT&T;'s basic DSL service runs at 768 Kbps and includes a free wireless service. The free wireless service comes in the form of a wireless broadband router. This router allows you to access the Internet through a standard Wi-Fi connection. It also allows you to set up a wireless home network to share printers, programs or files. AT&T; DSL offers three other speeds. The "Express" service is set at 1.5 Mbps, while the "Pro" speed is set at 3 Mbps and the "Elite" service is set at 6 Mbps.
Standard Features of AT&T; DSL
Every AT&T; DSL account comes with a host of standard features. With any account, you receive a pop-up blocker to help keep ads from taking over your screen, parental controls, firewall software to protect from hackers, e-mail virus protection software, online storage of up to 1 gigabyte, up to 10 additional AT&T; e-mail accounts, and access to the company's Messenger software that allows for video chatting online.
