Step-by-Step How to Install AT&T High Speed Internet Service

by Leigh Egan, Demand Media

AT&T; offers high-speed Internet service to customers within the area range of high-speed coverage. When you choose AT&T; high-speed Internet as your Internet Service Provider, you are offered the option to either have a professional installation technician come to your home and install your equipment, or use a self-install installation kit in which you can perform the installation yourself. The advantage of choosing to install the equipment yourself, is that there will no charge for professional installation. AT&T; provides all the necessary equipment in order for you to get started.

Telephone Filters

Connect the single-port telephone filters to every telephone jack in your home, except for the primary phone jack in which you will use for your modem. The filters ensure that the static and noise caused by your DSL service will be eliminated from your phone line. If you do not have land-line telephone service, then you can skip connecting the filters.

Data Cable Connection

Connect the filter with two ports into your main telephone jack, then connect your telephone's cord into the filter's port that says "Phone." Locate the data cable included in your installation kit, and connect it to the port that says "DSL." Keep in mind that the data cable may vary in color. Connect the other end of the data cable into the telephone port located on the back of your high-speed modem. If you do not have a land-line phone, simply connect the data cable directly into your telephone wall jack.

Ethernet Cable Connection

Locate the yellow Ethernet cable included in your installation kit. Plug one end into the Ethernet port on your computer, then plug the other end into the Ethernet port on your high-speed modem. Make sure both ends of the Ethernet cable are securely fastened. You will hear a "click" sound once they are attached securely.

Power Cord Connection

Plug the power cord into your high-speed modem, then plug the other end into an electrical outlet. Wait while the modem boots up. When the lights on the modem go to a solid green color, and the "Activity" or "Internet" light is blinking green, you are ready to go online.

Activation and Regsitration

Open up your browser, and wait for the registration page to load. The registration page normally loads automatically, but if it doesn't, navigate to the AT&T; "Activate Your Account" website. Input your account number, then follow the prompts to register and activate your account. Visit the AT&T; "Support" website if you need further assistance.
