How Do I Set Up My Wireless Router Through Comcast High Speed Internet?

Connect your Comcast Internet to a router and become wireless.

High-speed Internet has very quickly become a way of life for most households across the nation. Whether high-speed DSL or high-speed cable broadband, fast Internet is highly sought after for enhanced download and upload speeds and overall maneuverability through vast Web content. Comcast is among the major players such as Verizon, Bell South, AT&T; and Dish Network filling the space as Internet Service Providers. Installing a wireless router to your ISP can give you freedom with your mobile devices within your home.

Step 1

Screw one end the coaxial cable into the backside of the modem. Screw the opposite end into the cable wall outlet. Leave the modem unplugged for the time being.

Step 2

Insert one end of the Ethernet cable into the port labeled "Internet" on the back of the router; insert the opposite end of the Ethernet cable into to the port on the modem labeled "Internet."

Step 3

Turn on your computer. Insert the Installation disk containing the software for your wireless router into your CD-ROM drive. Follow the instructions provided by the Installation Wizard for downloading the software to your computer.

Step 4

Set up your password and enter the WEP key included with the software. Name your router for identification later. Save your changes and click "Finish" when you have completed the Installation Wizard setup.

Step 5

Plug your cable modem and wireless router into power outlets. Allow the devices to power up. Your router will have three or more lights to come on depending on the manufacturer indicating it's ready for use.

Step 6

Click the "Wireless" icon on your computer -- two computers side by side on older systems, or a set of bars on newer systems -- on your menu tray at the bottom right corner of your home screen. Under the tab "Wireless Network Connection" click on your ISP name.

Step 7

Click "Connect" on your ISP. Wait as the router communications with your cable modem. The tab for your ISP will show "Connected" indicating you're ready to open your Web browser and begin using the Internet through your wireless router.

Tips & Warnings

  • Write down your WEP key and password for your wireless router as they maybe required again if your system loses power or resets. Wireless routers vary by class, so check the router to ensure it has the ability to connect to the wireless devices in your home. Also check to see how much square footage your wireless router will cover before making the purchase to ensure it will cover the space within your home.
  • When purchasing a wireless router, check with the retailer to see what its return policies are if the router isn't the right fit for your system.
