How to Test Internet DSL Speed with a DSL Meter

by Dan Hatter, Demand Media

If your Internet Service Provider (ISP) is supposed to be providing you with a specific speed for your DSL connection, it is important that you make sure you're getting what you're paying for. For example, if you are paying for three MB/s download speed and one MB/s upload, but the actual speeds you're getting are only two MB/s and 512 KB/s, you need to contact your ISP and make sure they raise your connection speed to the proper level. Test your Internet speed with an Internet speed meter which works perfectly with a DSL connection.

Step 1

Test your DSL Internet speed with the Speedtest.net speed meter. Click and drag the map to navigate to the desired Internet server location and then click on a server to begin the speed test. Once complete, you will be shown the actual downloading and uploading speed of your DSL Internet connection.

Step 2

Test your DSL Internet speed with the Bandwidth.com speed meter. The website for this is listed in the References section below. Click on the "Begin Test" button on the Internet Speed Test page to initiate the test. When it is complete, the screen will display the actual downloading and uploading speed of your DSL Internet connection.

Step 3

Test your DSL Internet speed with the Speakeasy.net speed meter. The website for this is also listed in the References section below. Select an Internet Server location from the list, such as San Francisco or Dallas, to begin the speed test. When it is complete, you will see the actual downloading and uploading speed of your DSL Internet connection.
