How to Transfer from the Digital Cable Box to a Computer

by Alice Godfrey, Demand Media

A digital cable box configures a digital video signal so that it can be displayed on a television in your home.To transfer the video from the digital cable box to your computer, instead of a video display device like a television, a TV tuner must be installed in the computer. The TV tuner, which is inexpensive to purchase, can be acquired from an electronics or computer store. Installing the television tuner requires a few household tools, but will not require any modification of the computer.

Step 1

Shut down the computer. Unplug the power cord from the outlet and let the computer cool for an hour before continuing. Remove the side panel using a Phillips-head screwdriver and place the screws aside to reuse later.

Step 2

Open the side panel and place it next to the computer, out of the way. Remove the screw from one of the tabs covering slots on the back end of the computer using the Phillips-head screwdriver. Place the screw in a pocket. Pull the tab out of the slot and dispose of it in the trash or place it away for safekeeping.

Step 3

Touch a metal part inside the computer, for example, the shield over the power supply, to remove any static electricity build-up. Open the protective bag of the TV tuner and remove it, holding it by the edges.

Step 4

Line up the connectors on the bottom of the TV tuner with the connections inside the slot. Insert the TV tuner into the slot at an angle so that the connections on one end exit through the hole in the back of the computer. Press down on the TV tuner to firmly seat it in the slot. Attach the screw, taken from your pocket, into the screw hole on the top edge of the TV tuner using the Phillips-head screwdriver.

Step 5

Place the side panel back on the computer and reattach the screws. Plug the power cord back in.

Step 6

Screw a coaxial cable into the "Coax out" or "Cable out" or similarly named coaxial connection on the back of the digital cable box.

Step 7

Screw the other end of the coaxial cable into the coax connection on the TV tuner that can now be seen exiting the back of the computer. Video from the digital cable box is now being transferred to the computer and can be viewed using any video playback software that accesses the TV tuner.

Tips & Warnings

  • Most TV tuners come with a video playback software program to use.
  • You will have to change channels using the digital cable box remote.
  • Don't handle a TV tuner by the contacts because this could result in damage to the tuner from discharging static electricity.
