How do I Connect a Cable to a Computer Monitor?

by Joshua Benjamin, Demand Media

There are only two categories of cable you can plug into a computer monitor: the power cable and the video cable. Both of the cables plug into either the back or the bottom of the computer screen and are relatively simple to connect. There are two types of video cable -- S-Video and DVI -- so make sure you have the right cable for your monitor.

Step 1

Examine your computer monitor and locate the input plugs for both the power cable and the video cable. The power cable plug has a much larger opening suitable for your power cable while the video plug is smaller and rectangular in shape.

Step 2

Check the video cable plug once you have found it to determine which type of cable it fits. S-video plugs are trapezoidal and have round pinholes while DVI plugs are rectangular and have square pinholes.

Step 3

Plug the power cable into the appropriate receptor.

Step 4

Plug one end of your video cable -- either S-Video or DVI depending on the connector type -- into the video cable connection.

Step 5

Plug the other end of the video cable into the video connection on your computer. The connector looks exactly the same as it did on your monitor.
