VoIP, which stands for Voice over Internet Protocol, is a digital phone service that uses a broadband Internet connection to transmit your voice to the recipient. Services from your broadband Internet provider as well as third party services such as Vonage and Skype are all VoIP based. Some use a regular telephone, while others go through your computer. All of them can be adapted to use a standard cordless phone.
Direct VoIP Services
A VoIP service that is provided through your broadband service provider can be used with any phone you currently own. Your phone is connected either directly to the high speed modem or to a special box designed to connect your phone to the signal. You will not plug the phone into a regular wall jack, but the regular power outlet required by cordless phones will still be needed.
Vonage
Vonage is the most popular third party VoIP service. It uses the same connection you get through your broadband Internet provider. Vonage will provide you with a box that interfaces between the modem and your cordless phone.
Skype
Skype became famous as a third party VoIP service that works directly through your computer, letting you make both voice and video calls over your Internet connection. Recently, new adapters have allowed the use a regular cordless phone to make calls over the Skype network. You will need to have another phone service in place, however, for this to work. In some cases, you can even directly connect your phone to your modem to use Skype.
MagicJack
A recent entry into the VoIP market, the Magic Jack system is a USB device that connects to your computer. You can then plug your standard phone right into the device and make phone calls over your broadband line.
Other Third Party VoIP Providers
There are many other VoIP services out there, most of them computer based at this time. More providers will start allowing use of traditional cordless phones or mobile phones as the technology advances and becomes more popular.
