VoIP, which stands for Voice over Internet Protocol, is a popular option for telephone service. This services sends voice calls over the Internet, bypassing the telephone company altogether. The benefit is avoiding the hefty long distance charges the phone company charges. Since there are many VoIP providers, there's a good change one will suit your needs.
Quality
If you can't communicate with the person on the other end of your call, there really is no point to making the call. Some VoIP services offer excellent quality, while others provide substandard service. Read reviews and look for companies that offer a trial period so you can test their quality out for yourself. Since some providers require long-term contracts, if you sign up with one and are unhappy with its quality you'll end up losing some money to switch providers. If you pick a provider with a trial period, you can cancel the service any time within the trial period without incurring a penalty.
Calling Plans
The calling plans offered through VoIP providers are as varied as cell phone and traditional landline plans. Most offer unlimited local calling as well as unlimited calling within the United States. If you don't make overseas phone calls, than this is all you need. If you do make overseas calls, check out the per minute rates to the countries you call.
Cost
When shopping for a VoIP service, cost is not the only aspect that matters. Cost should play a role in your decision, but you should put more emphasis on quality and reputation than on cost. If you've narrowed down your choices and the only thing that separates them is cost, then you can make your decision based on cost. Remember to factor in the cost of the overseas calls when determining which company offers the best value.
Customer Service
Many users have difficulties using VoIP, especially when setting it up and making their first few calls. Because of this, you'll want to look for a company that offers technical support, preferably 24-hour support seven days a week. This way, if you encounter any difficulties with the service you can call them up, or initiate a chat session with them, and have them walk you through the process.
