How do I Add a Linksys Wireless G Broadband Router to an Existing Network?

by Alexis Rohlin, Demand Media

Linksys Wireless-G broadband routers have a built-in local area network, or LAN switch, that will allow you to connect up to five computers to the router. LAN switches allow your computer to communicate with other computers on your network. You can send information to computers at the same time as other users without slowing down the network. You can add your Linksys Wireless-G broadband router to your existing internal or LAN switch with Ethernet cables.

Step 1

Plug your Linksys Wireless-G broadband router into an electrical outlet. Wait one minute to give the router a chance to "initialize" or boot up.

Step 2

Plug an Ethernet cable into the "Internet" port on the back of the router. Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into the "Ethernet" or "LAN" port of your DSL modem, cable modem or Internet router that was installed by your Internet service provider.

Step 3

Insert the second Ethernet cable into a free port located on the LAN switch of your existing network. Insert the other end of the Ethernet cable into the Linksys Wireless-G Broadband router.

Step 4

Open your preferred Web browser. Type "http://192.168.1.1" into the search bar and hit "Enter." A Linksys window will open asking for a user name and password so that you can access the configuration page to your router. Type "admin" for both the user name and password and hit "Enter." The Setup page will appear.

Step 5

Type in the "Router Name" in the text box next to it. Click "Save Settings." Click "Continue" when you see the dialog box with the message "Settings are successful" appear.

Step 6

Click the "Wireless" tab located at the top of the "Settings" screen. Type the "Wireless Network Name (SSID)" into the text box. Click "Save Settings" and then click "Continue."

Step 7

Select the "Wireless Security" tab. Click on "Security Mode" to get the drop-down menu to appear. Select "WEP" to make a drop-down menu appear. Select "128 bits 26 hex digits." Type in a password that is up to eight characters long and type it into the "Passphrase" text box. Click "Generate." Click "Save Settings" and "Continue."

Step 8

Click "Edit MAC Filter List" if you have a wireless network. The MAC Address Filter List window will open. Type in the physical address for each computer on your network. Click on "Save the Settings" and "Continue," then close the window.

Step 9

Click the "Administration" tab. Change the default password for the wireless router setup pages. Type a new password into the "Router Password" field. Save settings as before.
