Wireless connections have become a common method for accessing the World Wide Web because of the portability offered versus standard Ethernet connections. You can set up a wireless network using your existing DSL (or digital subscriber line) Internet connection and a router equipped with the G-network protocol. Once connected, your G-router can also be used to access printers or other computers on your network for file sharing purposes. Be sure you are comfortable performing all of the steps necessary to set up your network prior to beginning the process.
Step 1
Unplug your DSL modem to power it off.
Step 2
Unplug the Ethernet connection running from your DSL modem to any pre-existing printers and computers in your home.
Step 3
Plug the Ethernet cord connected to your DSL modem into the Internet port on your router.
Step 4
Power on your DSL modem and allow it to start up before moving on to the next step. A good indicator that your modem has fully booted is when the status lights stop blinking.
Step 5
Turn on your router and wait for the Internet status light to stop blinking.
Step 6
Turn on your computer.
Step 7
Connect to the modem by entering the factory set IP address into your computer's web browser. For NETGEAR brand modems the IP address is http://192.168.0.1.
Step 8
Enter the username and password that was preset by the manufacturer of your router to access the settings menu.
Step 9
Run the smart setup wizard to automatically configure your Internet connection. Be sure to write down the network name and password you assign your router when configuring your wireless network settings.
