ADT vs. SafeTouch

by Rebecca C. Jernigan, Demand Media

Home security systems can protect your family and your belongings by alerting the authorities to a break-in. Some systems are also capable of detecting fires, carbon monoxide levels and other potentially dangerous changes in your home. When deciding whether to use ADT or SafeTouch, consider your location and your monitoring needs.

Availability

ADT is available in most areas of the United States. SafeTouch, however, is only available in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina, as of publication. To determine if either service is available specifically in your town, contact the company.

Sensors

SafeTouch's sensors can monitor intrusions and potential fires, alerting local authorities and routing them to your home. ADT's sensors can detect intrusion and fire as well, and can also monitor the carbon monoxide levels, temperature and check for flooding.

Cameras

Both companies offer indoor and outdoor video surveillance. SafeTouch can provide a variety of cameras -- from infrared versions to Web cameras that can remotely broadcast images. ADT only offers Web-enabled cameras, which can send you email alerts when something triggers the camera.

Other Services

In addition to home security systems, ADT offers a medical alert system. This provides you with a push-button device that you can wear as a necklace or bracelet. When activated, the device will alert ADT monitoring staff that you are having a medical emergency, enabling them to contact emergency services for you.
