According to AT&T;, the company is the largest wired and wireless broadband provider in the United States. AT&T;'s DSL high speed Internet allows users to surf the net from home or at Wi-Fi hotspots across the country. Customers who subscribe to AT&T;'s home phone and high speed Internet services can use their telephone while using the Internet. AT&T; also allows Internet users to subscribe to its Internet service without purchasing a phone plan.
Plans
AT&T; offers four high speed Internet plans for customers without a home phone service. The DSL Direct Basic plan is the standard option, with up to 768 kilobytes per second (Kbps) download speeds and up to 384 Kbps upload speeds. The DSL Direct Express plan offers faster download speeds at up to 1.5 megabytes per second (Mbps). AT&T;'s DSL Direct Pro plan features download speeds of up to 3.0 Mbps and upload speeds of 512 Kbps, while the fastest plan, DSL Direct Elite, provides download speeds of up to 6.0 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 768 Kbps.
Choosing the Right Plan
Each plan caters to different types of Internet users. The Basic plan is ideal for customers who download small files and use the net primarily for web surfing and email. The remaining plans are catered to users who also use the Internet for downloading music and sharing photos. The Express plan is also ideal for social networking, while the Pro plan is recommended for users with home networks with multiple computers or users. The Pro and Elite plans are also recommended for online gaming. Faster speeds with the Pro plan are ideal for streaming video.
Features
All plans allow customers to register up to 11 email accounts. Plans also include online photo and video storage, web-based mail with virtually unlimited storage space, a back-up dial-up account and 24-hour customer support services. All customers also have access to AT&T; Wi-Fi Basic at hotspots throughout the United States when using a Wi-Fi enabled device. AT&T;'s Internet Security Suite is included with Elite and Pro plans, and Express and Basic customers can opt to add the suite at an additional monthly fee.
Installation
All AT&T; high speed Internet plans require a DSL modem/router and local access line. Monthly fees for all plans do not include the cost of modems or AT&T; Wireless Gateway devices. Subscription to a telephone service is not required to purchase a high speed Internet plan. AT&T; charges installation fees when a technician is required to set up Internet equipment, and charges additional fees for home network installation.
Bandwidth Caps
AT&T;'s DSL high speed Internet plans have a usage allowance of 150 gigabytes per month. When users exceed this limit, notices are sent to customers for the first two months that the monthly allowance has been reached. If a user exceeds the monthly allowance for a third time, a fee is applied for every 50 gigabyte of data over the monthly allowance.
