Clearwire, shortened to Clear, and Frontier Communications are comparable only in their Internet services. You can purchase high-speed Internet, home phone services and digital TV through Frontier, but not Clear. Clear puts a focus on 4G coverage. Clear is also more available on the coasts, while Frontier is more widely available in the Midwest and rural towns.
Technology
Clear has three devices for customers: 4G Mobile USB, Modem with Wi-Fi and a Clear Spot 4G. The 4G Mobile USB is designed to plug into your computer so you can access broadband while around town, as long as you're close to Clear's towers and network. There's also a 4G+ USB that switches to 3G when out of 4G range. The modem with Wi-Fi provides your home with unlimited broadband wireless Internet. The Clear Spot 4G offers unlimited uploading and downloading transfers for up to eight devices while away from home. Frontier offers Dish Network Satellite TV with the option to add premium channels, such as HBO and Showtime, sports and movie channels. Frontier's Internet operates off the company's network, offering constant connectivity and high browsing speeds. Frontier's digital home phone service offers high-tech calling features, such as call waiting, caller ID and call rejection options.
Services
Clear offers seven plans that include a variety of USB devices, Wi-Fi modems and Clear Spot 4G devices. You can mix-and-match the devices that you need -- having only one of each, two different ones paired together or more than one of the devices. The price increases the more devices you add, with the more advanced devices increasing the price even more. Frontier offers three packages with the simplest plan, Single Play, being just home phone service; the next plan, Double Play, including TV and Internet or Internet and home phone; and the last plan, Triple Play, including all three. The Single Play plan is the cheapest with the Triple Play plan being the most expensive. You can also buy any of the components stand-alone.
Coverage
Clear has coverage in most of the large cities in the U.S. Its market is more prominent on the East Coast, in the Northwest, mid-California, large cities in Texas and spotted locations in Florida and throughout the Midwest. Its 3G coverage has further reach than its 4G coverage, as of 2011. Frontier tends to offer coverage in more rural areas, densely within the Midwest and in more desert locations, such as Arizona and Utah.
Customer Service
Clear offers a wide range of answers to frequently asked questions, support forums and downloadable forms that detail device specifications. You can also live chat with a representative and call Clear's toll-free number for support. Frontier also has a live chat feature as well as many toll-free numbers to call for support depending on which area of the country you live in. It also has separate numbers and support for the residential customers versus the business customers.
