If you don't like carrying your cell phone with you everywhere you go -- even in your own home -- then subscribing to home telephone service can be a liberating change. Choppy conversations and dropped calls due to poor signal strength are non-existent headaches for landline users. Compare two companies, Comcast and Qwest, that offer home telephone service and find out which one best suits your needs.

Comcast Xfinity

Xfinity Voice is Comcast's home telephone service. For a monthly fee, Comcast gives you the option to make unlimited local and long-distance calls to numbers within the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico. The telephone service comes with 12 features, including caller ID, call waiting, call screening, call forwarding and call return. With Comcast Smart Voicemail, you can check your voicemail messages from your computer or your smartphone. Smart Voicemail also can send you an email notification when you receive a voicemail message. For additional monthly fees, you also can subscribe to international calling plans.

Separate charges are applied when calling international cell phones. Comcast charges activation fees with new service agreements, and many plans require long-term contracts with termination fees.

The most inexpensive plan covers basic service with unlimited local phone calls without special features. Additional plans offer special phone features and unlimited calling to local and nationwide long-distance phone numbers in the U.S., Guam, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Qwest's 10 special features include call forwarding, call rejection, 3-way calling and last call return. Qwest also offers international calling plans. You have to option of choosing plans to call to various countries, only Canada or only Mexico and other Latin American countries.
