Mobile broadband technology expands the reach of the Internet. No longer tethered to a desktop computer, you can access information and entertainment on the go with a broadband-enabled device. Armed with a tablet or smartphone, you can watch streaming video, check email or download files anywhere you receive enough signal strength. A competitive market of Internet Service Providers has made mobile broadband an appealing option. As a consumer, you should always do research before making a purchasing decision. When considering mobile broadband, speed is one of the most important factors to study.
Step 1
Write a list of your top three activities on the Internet, such as chat, gaming and file transfers. This will help you figure out how you wish to use mobile broadband access.
Step 2
Navigate to the homepages of several mobile broadband providers. Check the local Yellow Pages to learn who provides wireless broadband in your area. AT&T;, Verizon Wireless, Cricket and Clearwire all sell wireless Internet subscriptions.
Step 3
Find the advertised speed of each provider's wireless network. Typically this number will be on the same page as their data plans. Cricket, for example, claims a download speed of 1.4Mbps. Verizon's 4G network boasts speeds between 5 and 12Mbps. Higher speeds means that Web pages load faster and large files download more quickly. Make a ranked list of providers and speeds.
Step 4
Look at limiting factors, such as caps on monthly usage or poor data coverage in your area. Look at the coverage maps provided on the ISP's website and check that all of your favorite destinations receive high quality signal. Some plans, like Cricket's, have limitations on how much you can download in single month. If you download large files, then you may want to look elsewhere for service.
Step 5
List and compare any bonus features. Some providers may provide free equipment, while others charge a monthly lease. Every provider will attempt to sweeten its deals. Look for add-on benefits that you might actually use.
Step 6
Strike a balance between cost and need. Determine the plan that best fits your requirements as far as speed and limitations and make sure it's within your budget. Don't pay for unneeded features.
Tips & Warnings
- The speeds advertised by ISPs are maximum speeds under ideal conditions. Average speeds will often be less. A good rule of thumb is to purchase a little more than what you need.
