Computer Broadband Plans Comparison

by Skip Shelton, Demand Media

Broadband refers to high-speed Internet service. Broadband services include DSL, cable, satellite and wireless options. Compare by plans by evaluating the speeds, installation requirements, costs and unique qualities of each service. Large and small companies around the country offer broadband service, and they all use the same infrastructure. Broadband connection speeds of 1.5Mbs -- read as "1.5 megabits per second" -- are approximately 25 times faster than dial-up modem speeds. Connections require a registered modem or connection device to access the Internet.

Digital Subscriber Lines: DSL

Digital-subscriber lines, or DSL, transmit network data across phone lines. In addition to the phone line infrastructure, Internet connectivity requires service within 10,000 feet of a DSL hub for optimal connections. DSL plans range from 1.5Mbs to 24Mbs. Upload speeds, generally not as critical to performance as download, range from 128Kbs to 1Mbs, or about 2 times to 18 times faster than dial-up. Prices range from about $15 to $50 per month for stand-alone service, and less if bundled with phone-service packages.

Cable

Broadband cable is transmitted across the same coaxial cable that transmits cable television. As with DSL, connectivity is limited to specific distances from the cable hub. Cable companies typically perform quality assurance testing prior to offering the product to subscribers. Cable plans range from 1Mbs to 30Mbs download speeds. Upload speeds generally range from .5Mbs to 1.5Mbs. Plans cost between $35 and $55 per month, though many cable companies offer introductory pricing for a fixed time at a lower price for contract service.

Satellite

Satellite broadband uses signals from fixed-orbit satellites above the earth. The distance between the satellite and your device results in a high delay, called "latency," that adversely affects many online games and video conferencing. Speeds are slower than other broadband options, ranging from .5Mbs to 1Mbs downloads and .1Mbs to .25Mbs uploads. Rural availability makes this a popular choice for customers who would otherwise be limited to dial-up. Prices range from $40-$60 per month with installation costs up to $600 for fixed satellite transceivers.

Wireless

Wireless connectivity is achieved through broadcast of radio signals. Unlike DSL, cable and Satellite connectivity requiring modems, wireless connections typically use a portable connection device, such as a USB drive or laptop expansion card, to provide service. Connection to the service is maintained through signal reception, enabling users to be highly mobile within the broadcast range. Plans range from .5Mbs to 1.5Mbs download speeds with .3Mbs to .5Mbs upload speeds. Prices range from $15 for introductory services to $40 for premium packages.

Connected Device Performance

Performance of broadband services requires devices to be fully capable of utilizing the transmitted data. PCs with poorly performing operating systems, limited memory, slow hard drives and slow processors process incoming data more slowly than more powerful devices. Modems and routers should match the recommended hardware requirements of your broadband service for optimal connections. Update your modem and router firmware for more optimal data handling.
