Subscribers to Verizon's dial-up service can access the Internet nationwide through any web-enabled computer. The service is ideal for Internet users in rural areas that may not be able to connect to DSL or fiber-optic broadband networks.
Plans
Verizon's unlimited dial-up plan offer unlimited Internet access and is ideal for frequent users. Occasional and casual users of the Internet can subscribe to limited plans with a monthly allowance of hours. Term commitments are not applicable for the service and customers can terminate their service at any time without penalty. All plans are subject to a set-up fee, which was $9.95 at the time of publication.
Features
Verizon's dial-up Internet plans include a range of standard features, such as a personalized homepage and a free website builder to create your own website. Subscribers also have access to Verizon's web-based e-mail with spam detector. Nationwide access to Verizon's dial-up service also is provided to customers who subscribe to a broadband Internet plan. Subscribers to limited plans have access to one email account, while subscribers to the unlimited plan can register up to four email accounts.
Speed and Equipment
Verizon offers speeds of up to 56 kbps, the standard maximum connection speed for dial-up Internet. In comparison, Verizon's FiOS Internet service, delivered through fiber-optic technology, features download speeds up to 50 mbps, and the company's DSL Internet service offers download speeds of up to 15 mbps. Subscribers to Verizon's dial-up service connect to the Internet using a phone line.
Cost
At the time of publication, the price for Verizon's limited plans ranged from $11.99 for 50 hours per month to $21.99 for 150 hours per month. An additional charge of $0.95 was applicable for each hour over the monthly allowance. The monthly fee for Verizon's unlimited dial-up plan was $24.95. In comparison to other dial-up services with unlimited Internet and no service commitments, AT&T; offered a monthly rate of $22.95 and AOL offered a monthly rate of $25.90. Some ISPs offer dial-up services at lower rates, subject to a term commitment. For example, EarthLink provided rates of $14.95 per month for its dial-up service with a one-year contract.
