Dial-up Internet service provides far less speed than a broadband Internet connection. The difference in speed determines the overall Internet experience for the user. A slower Internet connection means that many features found within web sites will not run smoothly. Dial-up customers also cannot use the Internet when their home telephones are in use. Many dial-up customers switch to broadband cable Internet service for more convenient connections, and so they can enjoy video and dense web site content.
Step 1
Contact a broadband Internet service provider to establish an Internet subscription. Order installation or a self-installation kit from the provider you have chosen.
Step 2
Disconnect the dial-up service from your computer. Dial-up is connected to the computer via telephone wires. Disconnect the telephone wire from the modem.
Step 3
Remove the telephone wire filters from each of the telephone jacks in the home or office. The filters are used to protect any component connected to the telephone jacks in the house, such as a fax machine and telephones. Plug the components that were previously plugged into the telephone jacks through the filters directly into the wall telephone jacks.
Step 4
Connect the broadband coaxial cable into the coaxial input on the modem. Connect the power adapter lead into the power input on the modem and plug the adapter into the electrical wall outlet or power strip surge protector.
Step 5
Plug the cat-5 Ethernet cable into the Ethernet jack on the modem labeled "LAN." For wireless connectivity, proceed to step 6. For a wired broadband connection, plug the Ethernet cable into the Ethernet port on the computer.
Step 6
Plug the Ethernet cable from the modem into the "WAN" port on the wireless router. Plug the power adapter lead into the wireless router and plug it into the wall outlet or power strip.
