How Do I Connect a Network & DVR Camera Setup?

by Patrick Nelson, Demand Media

Some digital video recorders can handle up to 16 cameras simultaneously using H.264 video technology. Motion detection can prompt the cameras to record to a hard drive and incidents can be viewed through private Web addresses if you connect the DVR to an Internet router. Once the cameras are set up and Internet service is established through the provisioning of a router, all connections are usually made on the back of the DVR.

Step 1

Connect the cameras to the "Video In" panel on the back of the DVR. The panel can consist of up to 16 jacks. It's best to label the incoming leads with the location of the camera. The most logical connections are geographic and in a circle. So, say you have four cameras, one in each corner of a warehouse, install the first camera at position, or jack number 1. Then, install the next one clockwise at position 2, the next clockwise at 3 and so on.

Step 2

Connect any microphones to the "Audio/Mic" jack. There is unlikely to be more than a few audio inputs for audio.

Step 3

Connect a computer-style VGA monitor to the jack labeled "VGA-OUT." You can also use a flat-panel television if it has a VGA input. VGA inputs are often called "Computer In" in TV marketing materials. Sometimes there will be "Video Out" which uses composite AV cables. You can use a traditional TV for that output.

Step 4

Connect an Ethernet cable to the router. An Ethernet cable has plugs, called RJ-45s, that are like enlarged phone cable plugs. Plug one end into the DVR and one into a port on the router. The ports are usually labeled 1 through 4 or 8. Use the first available.
