Since DSL setup requires a connection to your phone line, it often takes a degree of creativity to keep all your phones connected once you've installed the modem, especially if you have limited wall jacks. The best way to hook up multiple devices into limited numbers of wall jacks is by using telephone splitters. Filters work fine with splitters and depending on the number of phones you are using and the number of wall jacks you have, you may need multiple filters. For a configuration for six phones with two wall jacks, you will need two filters.
Step 1
Plug the two-way splitter into the wall jack closest to your modem. Plug your modem into one of the available jacks on the splitter and plug the filter into the other jack. Plug one of the phones into the filter.
Step 2
Plug the other filter into your remaining wall jack. Plug the five-way splitter into the filter and plug the remaining five phones into the available jacks on the splitter.
Step 3
Mix and match configurations based on your needs and phone locations. Telephone splitters come in varying numbers of jacks, including four- and three-way. However, when experimenting with different combinations, make sure there is no filter between your modem and the wall jack.
