Netflix vs. Cable

Cable television and Netflix are two options for delivering a wide variety of movies and programs to your home. Cable companies offer a menu of choices for subscribers, from sports packages to high-definition channels. Netflix represents the ultimate in custom viewing; subscribers can browse the vast Netflix library, selecting only those movies and shows that interest them.

Netflix

Netflix delivers movies and programming to subscriber's homes both instantly via the Internet and through the mail. New customers can choose from several packages, the most basic one only providing the instant service. However, Netflix places no ceiling on how much instant programming you consume. You never have to worry about overage charges or late fees, just a flat monthly rate. Game consoles and televisions now have the technology to connect to a home network and stream Netflix movies and shows, freeing you from your computer monitor.

Cable

Cable television providers like Comcast and Time Warner Cable provide customers lots of options and features to keep their business. Basic packages typically have less then a hundred channels, while premium offerings include 200 or more. A digital video recorder, optional with most cable packages, lets viewers pause, rewind and record live TV. With DVR, you don't have to make a date with your television to watch a particular show. On Demand programming includes thousands of selections, from movies to children's television.

Netflix Advantages

The variety of watch instantly programs available on Netflix is constantly growing. Customers can watch entire seasons of many shows, such as Battlestar Galactica or South Park. The selection of DVDs available by mail is enormous. One of the biggest advantages of Netflix is that there are no usage limits. Your queue of titles can be customized to arrive at your home in a particular order. If you know you'll never watch hundreds of channels, Netflix may be a good option.

Cable Advantages

With the convenience of DVR and a full menu of On Demand programming, high-end cable packages rival the selection and convenience of Netflix. Cable allows subscribers to watch and record the most current shows and movies. High-definition programming means superior picture quality, provided you have the necessary hardware. Digital cable packages often come with commercial-free music stations and a broad selection of sports networks. New subscribers can tailor their channel lineup to reflect their own viewing interests.
