How to Network Verizon Broadband

by Si Kingston, Demand Media

Many Verizon users want to set up their modems with a router to set up wireless Internet or to optimize the device for gaming or multimedia purposes. Verizon modems are combination units. These types of modems are comprised of both a DSL modem and a network address translation router. To setup a Verizon combination modem with router, you must turn off its router capabilities and turn the modem back into a simple modem by "bridging" it. After the modem is bridged, you can configure it to a router.

Bridge Mode

Step 1

Launch the Internet Explorer Web browser, and enter: http://192.168.1.1 in the address bar. Press the "Enter" key.

Step 2

Enter the user name and password into the corresponding fields when prompted. The default user name and password is "admin."

Step 3

Click "My Network" in the main menu, and select "Network Connections."

Step 4

Click "Broadband Connection (DSL)" in the Network Connections screen.

Step 5

Select "Edit" in the VCs section of the page.

Step 6

Click the drop-down menu next to "Protocol" in the VC1 Configuration screen. Select "Bridge," and click "Apply."

Step 7

Select "Routed Bridge" in the Bridge Mode drop-down menu. Click "Apply" and "OK."

Network

Step 1

Disconnect the modem from the computer. Turn off the computer.

Step 2

Plug the Verizon modem's Ethernet cable into the router's "WAN" or "Internet" port.

Step 3

Insert a second Ethernet cable into one of the router's "LAN" or numbered ports. Insert the other end of this cable into the computer's Ethernet port.

Step 4

Connect the router to the power outlet, if applicable. Turn on the computer.

Step 5

Insert the router's setup disk and follow the prompts to set up the router, or launch the Web browser and enter the default IP address for the router into the address field. This address varies per router brand. For example, to configure a Linksys router, enter: 192.168.1.1 into the address field and click the "Enter" key.

Step 6

Select "Automatic Configuration - DHCP" as the Internet Connection Type. Change the value in the third box on the IP address in the "Router Address" field to another number. Then select "Save Settings." The Verizon modem is now connected to the router.
