Picture-in-picture (PIP) has long been a popular feature many television viewers use to enhance their TV-watching experiences. PIP offers a convenient alternative to choosing one program to watch by simultaneously showing two channels--one on the main TV screen and one on a smaller screen. PIP is also a built-in feature on many DVR boxes. If you find that your Comcast box is not allowing you to use the PIP feature, you can typically resolve the issue in a few simple steps.
Verify Remote Settings
Comcast remote controls can be programmed to control all of the devices in your home entertainment center. A common cause of PIP problems or other malfunctions is simply that your remote is set to control a device other than your Comcast DVR. Set the Comcast remote to control the DVR by pressing the "Cable" button on the top of the remote and try to activate the PIP function again.
Replace Remote Batteries
Dying batteries are another common cause of remote control failure. If batteries are not completely dead but are on their way out, they may fail to operate one or two remote functions while leaving the others intact. Therefore, even if you are able to operate everything on the remote except the PIP, the batteries may still be the culprit. Replace the batteries before testing the PIP.
Reset the DVR
A simple reset of the DVR unit can often resolve many common technical problems. Simply unplug the power cord out of the back of the Comcast DVR. You can also unplug the DVR from its electrical source. Leave the cord unplugged for 30 seconds. Plug the power cord back in and allow the Comcast DVR to reboot. Once again, test the PIP function after the DVR has rebooted.
Contact Comcast
Should all the above troubleshooting steps fail, the only remaining option is to contact Comcast technical support. The technical support representative will take you through some additional troubleshooting steps. If necessary, the representative will coordinate a time with you to replace the DVR with one that has a working PIP function.
