Your ability to use a cable modem not provided by your ISP depends on its compatibility. Your ISP's hardware or network may or may not be compatible with any cable modem that you might purchase. To ease any confusion, many ISPs provide a list of modems compatible with their service. Check your ISP's website or call their customer service for a list.

Even if you have a cable modem that is technically compatible with your ISP, you may or may not be allowed to use it. Your ISP might restrict you to using specified modems only. Depending on your chosen package, your ISP might have either sold or rented one of its own modems to you. Check your contract or user agreement to see whether you are restricted to using that particular modem, or if you can use a different one.

Different cable modems may require you to run different hardware or software. Moreover, your ISP may require certain specifications in a cable modem. If your cable modem is compatible with your ISP's hardware, if your agreement or contract allows you to use a different modem, and if the modem meets certain requirements you can use your own modem. Even if your own modem meets all of these requirements, however, it may not work and you use it at your own risk. Some ISPs offer to test your modem for compatibility.
