While watching recorded television on your digital video recorder (DVR) is useful in the short term, if you want to archive your footage or save it for a long period of time, you may need to transfer it. Transferring footage from a DVR to a personal computer (PC) depends on the type of DVR you have, as well as the type of equipment you have on your computer. Depending on your setup, there are various options for recording the video onto your computer.
Step 1
Check for network jacks on your DVR. Some DVR machines now have Ethernet jacks on the back to connect to a router or hub. When connected, you may be able to transfer the content directly over a network connection.
Step 2
Check for a firewire or USB jack on the back of the DVR. As with the Ethernet option, some DVRs have USB or firewire jacks to connect directly to a computer. In this instance there likely will be computer software to be used in conjunction.
Step 3
Check the video inputs on your computer. If you are not able to transfer the data via a digital connection, you can record the stream live with the right equipment. You will need a video input receiver on your PC and the correct cable to connect your DVR to it. For example, if your PC has S-Video input and your DVR has S-Video output, you can record that feed on your PC.
