Stream Energy is a direct selling energy provider that offers deregulated electric and natural gas service to almost 500,000 households in selected states. Southwestern Electric Power Company (SWEPCO) serves over half a million customers and is part of the American Electric Power system, which serves 5 million customers in 11 states. Unlike Stream, SWEPCO is not open to competition in the areas it serves.

Markets Served

As of June, 2011, SWEPCO serves portions of several states: northwestern and central Louisiana, western Arkansas and eastern and areas of the north panhandle of Texas, for a total of over 3,900 miles of transmission lines and over 20,500 lines of distribution lines. Stream Energy's services covers four states: Texas, Georgia, Maryland and Pennsylvania, offering either electricity or natural gas to residential customers.

Services Provided

SWEPCO provides electricity to residences in the parts of the states it serves, and Stream Energy provides electricity to the states of Texas, Maryland and Pennsylvania while providing natural gas to the state of Georgia. Commercial customers in Texas may also sign up for Stream Energy's electricity service while business customers in Georgia may also participate in Stream Energy's natural gas capabilities.

Rates and Plans

Stream Energy offers a variety of residential electricity plans, which are calculated based on a tier system derived from historical usage and annual kilowatt use. The rate for a 1,000 kWh tier variable price plan in Texas is 11.8 cents in a given service area in the territory served, as of September, 2010; as of March, 2011, a one-year fixed rate plan for the same service area and pricing tier is 9.2 cents and slightly higher for the green and clean fixed rate plan. Stream also provides an 18-month fixed rate plan. As of May, 2011, SWEPCO maintains that the average residential cost per kilowatt hour is 7.8 cents.

Corporate

In 2010 SWEPCO reported $1.5 billion in operating revenues and total generating capacity of 5,273 MW, serving a total of 520,415 residential, commercial, industrial and public lighting customers. Its offices are located in Shreveport, Louisiana. Stream Energy obtained its license to offer electricity to customers in 2005 from the Public Utility Commission in Texas. Over the next six years, it branched out into Georgia, Pennsylvania and Maryland markets. It enrolls new clients through independent associates.
