How to Know if a TV is Digital

Step 1

Examine the outer physical features of your television. Older televisions that use cathode-ray tube technology are bulkier because they have to house the CRT mechanism. Flat screen displays are equipped with a digital tuner because housing a CRT mechanism is not possible with its sleek design.

Step 2

Look at the front and sides of the television frame for a sticker label that reads "DTV," HDTV," "Digital Tuner Built-In" or "Digital Receiver." If your television includes this sticker, it is equipped with a built-in digital tuner and is therefore a digital television set.

Step 3

Write down your television model number and research the particular model on the manufacturer's website. On the website, you should be able to see the specifications and features of the television. The features and specifications should tell you whether or not the television is compatible with a digital signal.

Step 4

Find out when you or the original owner of the television purchased it. Any television sets produced and distributed in the Untied States after the March 1, 2007 deadline must include a digital tuner, according to the DTV website. Since digital technology was not implemented until 1998, any television set prior to 1998 will most likely not have a digital tuner.
