What Is Cellular Broadband Service?

by Alexander Eliot, Demand Media

Cellular broadband service is a wireless broadband Internet connection offered by many mobile providers. With this service, you can wirelessly connect your cell phone device to a high-speed broadband Internet signal. Unlike Wi-Fi connections, which require you to be in close proximity to a wireless Internet transmitter, mobile broadband service allows you to connect to the Internet anywhere within your provider's cellular network.

Broadband Internet

The term "broadband" refers to the type of signal used to transmit Internet data. Unlike dial-up Internet, which uses a traditional phone signal, broadband Internet uses a signal that features a broader wavelength. This allows the signal to carry more information, which offers substantially faster rates of data transfer. Two of the most common types of broadband Internet used on computers are a DSL connection, which uses a traditional phone line, and a cable connection, which uses a coaxial cable connection.

Mobile Broadband

Mobile broadband service is offered on most modern phones. This service allows you to browse the Internet from your cell phone browser, as well as receive wireless data such as software and media. Generally, providers offer mobile broadband as a separate service package from their telephone and texting packages. Some plans may have restrictions, which limit the amount of Internet data you can access on your phone. However, most providers also offer unlimited data plan options, which allow you to access and download as much data as you wish.

How It Works

Just as with cellular telephone and texting service, mobile broadband service is provided via a wireless satellite signal. The satellite signal is transferred to cell towers from where it is broadcasted wirelessly to your device. Though most modern cell phones come stock with browsers and other Internet functions, you must sign up for a broadband data plan with your cellular service provider before your device is enabled to use these features.

Other Devices

Aside from cell phones, mobile broadband service can be used to connect other mobile devices to the Internet. Mobile network cards, which commonly utilize a USB connection, plug into your laptop, netbook or other portable computer device. This allows you to connect the device to the Internet anywhere within the service provider's network. Additionally, some mobile providers offer service plans that allow you to use your phone as a portable modem. With this service, your cell phone transmits its wireless broadband signal to your laptop or other mobile device, allowing it to connect to the Internet.
