Cricket provides wireless Internet to customers who subscribe to one of its prepaid broadband plans. To access Cricket's broadband service on a laptop or desktop, customers must purchase a mobile modem or wireless Internet device that creates mobile hotspots at home or within Cricket's coverage area. Launched in 2008, Cricket's broadband service targets budget-conscious and low-income customers.
Cricket Broadband
Cricket offers 3G, or third-generation cellular technology, wireless broadband. Customers who subscribe to Cricket's broadband service can browse the Internet using their mobile phone or smartphone, or with a laptop or desktop using a mobile modem connected to a USB port on their computer. Cricket's 3G network is also known as EVDO (Evolution-Date Optimized) or EV (Evolution-Date) wireless Internet.
Broadband Plans
Cricket features three broadband plans. The Basic plan is ideal for customers who use the Internet for email, social media, web browsing, instant messaging, chat and downloading or uploading pictures. Cricket's More plan is recommended for users who also use the Internet for entertainment, including viewing and downloading movies and music, and for online gaming. The Premium plan caters to customers with a home office or families with multiple Internet users.
Features
All plans feature download speeds of up to 1.4 megabytes per second. Cricket plans do not require signed contracts and can be canceled at any time without paying a termination fee. Security deposits are also not required and no activation fee is charged. Although Cricket's broadband offers customers unlimited access to the Internet, bandwidth is limited once monthly allowances are exceeded. Maximum speeds are reduced once the monthly limit is reached and users are only able to access the Internet for web browsing and emailing.
Usage Limits
Each Cricket broadband plan offers varying limits in the amount of data that can be uploaded and downloaded in a given month. With the Basic plan, customers can download and upload 2.5 gigabytes in a 30-day period. More plan users have access to five gigabytes per month and Premium plan customers have a usage limit of 7.5 gigabytes per month. Extra charges are not applied when a monthly allowance has been exceeded.
