Comparison of Broadband Phone Services

by Jim Green, Demand Media

Broadband phone service, also known as VoIP, or "Voice over Internet Protocol" phone service, is a newer technology that allows you to make and receive telephone calls over the Internet. It tends to be most useful for long-distance and international calling, as it is one of the most cost-effective telecommunications technologies on the market.

Phone Power!

Phone Power! offers customers an annual plan at a rate of $199.95 for the first year, with the second year free, as of June 2011. The plan includes unlimited calling within the United States and Canada, a free second line and 60 minutes of international calling per month. This is the equivalent of a basic rate of $8.33 per month.

ITP

The basic monthly rate in for ITP is $9.99 for 500 minutes of local calling, as of June 2010. It offers customers a range of incentives, including no prepaying, no contracts, unlimited calling and two months free with the purchase of certain extended plans.

VoIP.com

VoIP.com offers a free softphone to customers who sign up for an annual service plan, which in June 2010 is priced at $129.95 and allows for unlimited calling to land lines and cellular telephones in the United States and Canada.

CallCentric

One of the most attractive features of CallCentric service is its "pay per call" option. The company also allows customers to try out its service before buying, and frequently offers one-day sales that encourage customers to sign up at lower-than-usual rates.

Vonage

Vonage is one of the best known and most reliable VoIP service providers, and it offers an entry-level plan that features unlimited local and long-distance calling to cell phones and landline phones in the United States (including Puerto Rico) and Canada for $14.99 per month for the first three months, then $24.99 per month thereafter. International long distance rates vary, depending on the country you're calling.
