AT&T; and WOW! provide cable services in addition to Internet and phone services. Using its fiber-optic network, AT&T; delivers digital television under its U-verse brand. As of December 2010, AT&T; was the ninth largest multi-channel video programming distributor in the U.S., according to the National Cable and Telecommunications Association. WOW! was not ranked in the top 25, and unlike AT&T; does not offer nationwide service. WOW! service is limited to the Midwest region.
WOW!
WOW! delivers digital cable service to customers in Michigan, Illinois, Evansville Indiana, and Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio. In addition to offering packages with 65 to 250 cable channels, the cable provider offers free local television channels, on-demand programming, high-definition channels and a standard or high-definition digital video recorder. Premium services, such as HBO, can be purchased to enhance WOW!'s cable plans. WOW! also offers phone and Internet services, which can be bundled with the company's cable television plans.
AT&T;
AT&T;'s U-verse television plans include on-demand games and weather and customers can view up to four television programs at one time. Plans also include a digital video recorder and the company has also introduced options for owners of 3-D television sets. Subscribers to U-verse's voice communication plan can view enhanced calling features on their television, including call notifications and voice mail. With U-verse, subscribers can watch television programs from any Internet-connected computer or compatible wireless device on demand.
Plans
AT&T; offers five U-verse television plans with up to 80, 150, 260, 340 or 410 channels. Customers can also opt for a basic service with only local channels. The U450 and U300 plans, with 410 and 340 channels, respectively, feature access to several movie channels as well as digital music channels offered with the U200 plan. The U450 plan also includes HBO and approximately 135 high-definition channels. WOW! offers a basic cable plan with 65 channels and local broadcast stations. In addition to access to an on-demand service and digital music channels, the Digital Value plan features approximately 195 channels and the Digital Basic plan includes approximately 250 channels. The Digital Basic plan also includes 13 channels with commercial-free movies.
Price Comparison
In most markets, WOW! offers its cable television service plans for slightly higher cost than initial subscription rates for comparable AT&T; plans. All AT&T; rates increase following the first six months of service, however.As with most cable television providers, WOW! and AT&T; increase their package rates as the number of channels and features increase.
