How Do I Connect a Digital Cable Box?

by Alice Godfrey, Demand Media

A digital cable box provides a high-definition, digital TV signal. You can connect a digital cable box to a television yourself, providing that cable service has been activated. The video cable you will use is the same type that would connect a high-definition video player, for example, a Blu-ray player, to the television set. You will not need any tools to make the connection.

Step 1

Place the digital cable box next to the television set that it is to be used with. Plug the digital cable box's power cord into a wall outlet. Turn the digital cable box off with its remote, if it has turned on automatically. Rotate the digital cable box so that the back is facing you.

Step 2

Insert one end of a HDMI high-definition video cable into the HDMI output on the back of the digital cable box

Step 3

Rotate the box back to its original position. Plug the other end of the HDMI cable into a HDMI input on the digital television set; typically the input will be on a back panel that includes other types of connectors.

Step 4

Press the "System Setup" or "Menu" button on the remote, depending on the make of the television. Press the direction keys on the remote to highlight the Video icon from the onscreen menus. Select the Video icon, using the "OK" or "Enter" or "Select" key on the remote.

Step 5

Press the direction keys on the remote to highlight the "Video input" submenu. Select the submenu, using the remote.

Step 6

Press the direction keys to highlight the HDMI input that the cable from the digital cable box is connected to. Select the input, using the remote. Exit the menus by pressing "System Setup," or "Menu."

Step 7

Turn the digital cable box on with its remote. Use the remote to find a TV channel that you want to watch on the television.

Tips & Warnings

  • The HDMI cable's connectors only go one way into the connections, so do not force them if there is resistance.
