How to Connect a VCR to a Cable Box

by Alice Godfrey, Demand Media

A videocassette recorder (VCR) is a device that records and plays using videotape cassettes. You can play a VCR videotape on your TV by connecting the VCR to the cable box that is attached to the television. You will need some audio/visual cables that might already be on hand or can be acquired from a computer store if necessary. Connecting the VCR to the cable box does not modify or damage the box in any way.

Step 1

Screw one end of a coaxial cable onto the "Ant out" port on the back of the cable box. Screw the other end of the cable onto the "Ant in" port on the back of the VCR.

Step 2

Screw one end of a coaxial cable onto the "RF/Antenna output" port on the back of the VCR. Screw the other end of the cable onto the "RF/Antenna in" port on the back of the TV.

Step 3

Turn the TV on using its remote. Press the "Channel" keys to change the channel to "3."

Step 4

Change the TV channels using the cable box remote. Turn the VCR on using its remote and change the channel to "3" as well. Press the "Play" button on the remote to supersede the cable box and instead display the video from a cassette tape that has been loaded into the VCR.
