The PlayStation 3 requires a high speed Internet connection such as DSL to connect the console online. A built-in Ethernet port and wireless adapter gives you the option of making either a wired or wireless hook up to your DSL connection. Though the end result is the same, one type of connection may be more convenient than the other. If your DSL modem is linked to a wireless router, you can connect the PS3 from anywhere in your home. Depending on the quality of the router and the layout of your home, a wireless connection may not be as stable as a wired connection.
Wired
Step 1
Turn off the PS3. Connect one end of the Ethernet cable to the "Ethernet" port on the back of the PS3 and the opposite end into the "Internet/Ethernet" port on your broadband modem.
Step 2
Turn on the PS3 and scroll to the "Settings" icon on the main menu. Select "Network Settings," scroll to "Internet Connection" and select "Enabled." Scroll to "Internet Connection Settings" and press the "X" button.
Step 3
Select "Easy" as the connection type. The PS3 will check the DSL connection. Press the "X" button to save the settings, then select "Test Connection." After the test is complete, the PS3 will be hooked up to the DSL connection.
Wireless

Step 3
Select the type of security used by the wireless network and use the on-screen keyboard to enter the password. If the wireless network does not have a password, select "None" and press the "X" button.
Step 4
Press the "X" button to save the settings, then select "Test Connection." The PS3 will attempt to connect to the wireless network using the settings you have entered. After the test completes, the PS3 will automatically use these settings when connecting to the wireless network.
