DSL modems are devices that bring a high-speed Internet signal into your home using traditional phone lines. Wireless modems are designed to split any high-speed Internet connection into multiple connections and send them over a localized wireless network for use with various wireless devices such as computers and smartphones. After you hook up your router and modem you can change the settings on the router to suit your needs.

Step 1

Disconnect the power cord from the back of the unit to power down your DSL modem. Disconnect any Ethernet cables from the back of the unit as well.

Step 2

Insert one end of the Ethernet cable into the "Ethernet" port on the back of the modem. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable into the "WAN" port on the back of your wireless router.

Step 3

Plug the power cord into the back of the DSL modem and let the unit power on. Depending on the model of the DSL modem you are using, the status lights will blink and turn on in succession as the unit connects to the Internet. Wait about one minute for all of the status lights to turn solid green.

Step 4

Plug in the wireless router and wait at least 15 seconds. Depending on the model of your router you have, both the power light of the unit and the "WLAN" light should be a solid green.

Step 5

Plug an additional Ethernet cable into the back of the wireless router in any numbered port and the other end into the Ethernet port on the back of your computer. Open up a new browser window and type in the specific IP address of the wireless router into the address box. This address will vary depending on the model of wireless router you are using. When prompted, enter in the default user name and password for the router.

Step 6

Navigate to the wireless setup in your wireless router and create a network name and password for your network. When you're done, click "OK" or "Apply" and wait an additional 30 seconds for the wireless router to reset and apply the changes.

Tips & Warnings

  • To find the unique IP address for your wireless router and the default login name and password, check your router's user documentation.
  • When setting up a wireless network, it is far more secure to password protect your network in order to limit outside access to your files and your Internet connection.
