Help for a Nintendo Wii Not Connecting Through a Comcast Cable Modem

by Alexis Rohlin, Demand Media

The Wii console by Nintendo can connect to the Internet with its internal Wi-Fi. If you don't have a wireless router for your Internet, you can still connect to the Internet with a Wii LAN Adapter. Typical problems that may cause the Wii not to connect to your Comcast cable modem are firewall incompatibility, slow connection or wrong router settings.

Firewall Problems

If you receive an error code 52230, it means that your wireless router's firewall is not compatible with the Wii -- it will not recognize the software. A Netgear wireless router will work once the SPI firewall of the router is disabled. Disable the wireless router firewall by going to "WAN Setup" in the router's settings.

Error Codes

The Wii has online support available. When you receive a five-digit error code, write it down. Go to nintendo.com, click on "Support," then click on "Error Codes." Type in the five-digit error code in the text box next to "Error Codes" and follow the information on the screen. Select the error code that appears in the drop-down menu to view its description and find information that will help you fix the problem and connect to the Internet with your Wii.

Wii LAN Adapter

The Wii system, when not connected to a wireless Internet router for a Comcast cable modem, needs to be connected to the cable modem with a Wii LAN adapter. It is a square-shaped device with a USB cable and a port on one end that an Ethernet cable plugs into.

WiiConnect Service

If you receive the message "There is a problem with the WiiConnect24 service. Please try again later," you can do a few things to fix it. This error message is seen when your router's settings don't match the Wii's. Adjust the transmission rate of your router by lowering it to 1 or 2 mbp to get a stable connection. Turn off the router's "Speed Booster" options, which may also be called Nitro or Turbo boost. Look at the router's broadcast settings and change it to "Mixed," "G," or "B" to see if this fixes the connection. Change the wireless channel to 1, 6 or 11 and try to connect your Wii on each channel, as this may be the problem.
