DSL is an Internet-access technology that makes use of phone lines to transmit digital data. Although it is transmitted through telephone lines, it is many times faster than dial-up access and is considered "high-speed" Internet. If you have opted for DSL for your Internet access, you generally do not need a technician to set it up on your PC. You can sync your PC to the DSL by accessing your computer's control panel and following a few steps.

Step 1

Connect the DSL modem to a phone jack using regular RJ phone cable and connect the device to your computer using an Ethernet cable. Both the phone and Ethernet ports are usually located on the back of the device.

Step 2

Turn on your computer after you have connected the modem to a power source. Some DSL modems come pre-configured allowing you Internet access with no further steps, while others may come with a setup CD which you would need to run at this point in the process.

Step 3

Access your control panel from your start menu if your DSL modem was not pre-configured or did not come with a setup CD. From the control panel menu, select your network and Internet settings button and from there, click on the network and sharing center option. From here you will see the option to connect to the Internet.
