Many of the larger phone companies (and even some of the smaller ones) offer telecommunications packages that include home phone, Internet, and TV services. If, however, you'd prefer not to go through your phone company for one or more of these services, such as Internet, you can check out other options. There are several different ways to get high speed Internet access in your home, most of which don't even require phone service at all.
Step 1
Get DSL from a company other than your phone company. DSL is high speed Internet that's typically less expensive than cable Internet. Many different companies, including Comcast, Qwest, EarthLink, and Verizon offer DSL service without home phone service. After signing up for the service, you simply connect a phone cable from one of your phone jacks into your DSL modem (which you'll receive from the company from which you purchased the service). Connect your computer or wireless router to the DSL modem and you've got Internet.
Step 2
Get cable Internet. Cable Internet is high speed Internet that doesn't connect to your phone jack. The same type of cable that's used for TV service will be plugged into a wall. Plug this cable into the back of your cable modem (which you'll receive from the company from which you purchased the service), and then plug your computer or wireless router into a different port on the back of the cable modem. If you already have cable TV service, call that company to see if they offer any deals for bundling.
Step 3
Get satellite Internet. Companies like Wildblue and HughesNet offer Internet connections beamed to you via satellite. The connection speed is up to eight times quicker than a 56k modem (standard phone connection). It connects to your computer or wireless router in the same way that a cable modem does. The main advantage of satellite Internet is that it offers high speed access to people in rural areas, who are otherwise out of reach for cable and DSL service.
