Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) refers to any technologies that involve the transmission of voice data signals over the Internet. VoIP is also called Internet Telephony or Voice Over Broadband. It uses the Internet and related networks to transmit voice and data packages, rather than using the public switched telephone network. VoIP offers companies cost savings due to fewer taxes and allows them to leverage their existing network infrastructure. VoIP can also be used to eliminate the need for a PBX system. It can also result in significant savings on support staff costs.
Information Technology Departments
VoIP is centrally managed by the Information Technology departments of the organization and the telephone company. The technology uses the existing infrastructure in many cases, so the learning curve for IT staff is low. The telephone company and the receiving organization both save money on implementation and on hiring expensive consultants. Since VoIP leverages existing IT infrastructure, business risk is minimal and the telephone system can be easily integrated into the existing business systems with minimal disruption or downtime.
Convenience
VoIP allows the receiving organization to easily move around telephones and change user locations without having to change telephone or extension numbers. Since the voice data can be carried on the company's local area networks or wide area networks, employees can easily call each other internally and can call other users on the same network even if they are located in a different geographic location without incurring the cost associated with a traditional telephone call. This is more convenient for employees and should result in productivity gains.
PTSN
VoIP eliminates the need to use the public switched telephone network. This means that the telephone company no longer incurs the taxes associated with using this network. It will also make more efficient use of the existing copper telephone wire infrastructure, as moving some operations to VoIP decreases the amount of traffic being transferred over the telephone lines.
Support
VoIP phone systems eliminate the need for organizations to install a private branch exchange system, which enables internal telephone communications. These systems are expensive and complex to maintain and support. Many issues related to VoIP and any bundled Internet services can be handled by the same support staff, eliminating the need for specialized support departments.
