How to Set Up a VoIP Service

by Jack Powell, Demand Media

VoIP, which stands for Voice over Internet Protocol, is a method of making telephone calls over the Internet. This protocol allows users to bypass the phone company, which eliminates expensive long-distance charges. There are a variety of free VoIP services you can download or use directly through the Internet, including Skype and Google Voice. Some of these programs allow users to make video calls as well as audio calls.

Step 1

Determine which program is appropriate for you. There are many programs that offer a variety of features. Research the options and assess your personal needs. Skype, for example, offers users the ability to call cell phones and landlines for a small fee.

Step 2

Make sure you have the right equipment. VoIP software that utilizes the computer requires at least a microphone and speakers to make and receive calls. If a webcam is available, you will be able to use the video calling feature as well. If your desktop computer or laptop does not have this equipment, you must purchase it before you can make and receive calls through your computer.

Step 3

Download and install the program. Once you've selected the program of your choice, download it to your hard drive and install it. After you've saved it to your computer, find the file and double-click on the files to install it. Follow the prompts on the screen as it guides you through the installation process.

Step 4

Open the program. Find the program in your Program Files or Application program and double-click on it. You can add a shortcut to your desktop or add it to your taskbar or dock if you like. This allows you to access the program more quickly.

Step 5

Create an account. When opening the program for the first time, it will prompt you through the account creation process. You will be asked to pick a user name, or a phone number, and a password. You also must enter some additional information, including location information.

Step 6

Add a contact to the program. Most programs offer the option of storing contacts within the program. This allows you to add a contact once and access it whenever you like. You need your friends' usernames or phone numbers, and they need to use the same software on their end. Add as many contacts as you like.

Step 7

Check to determine whether one of your contacts is online. The program indicates who is online and who is offline. If you want to make a test call, you need to find a friend who is online.

Step 8

Make your first VoIP call. Click on the contact you wish to call, and click on the call button. If your VoIP software offers video calls and audio calls, choose the type of call. After you click the call button, adjust the volume if necessary and wait for your friend to answer.
