How to Get Faster Wi-Fi

Step 1

Position your router in a location other than the floor. Do not place it near metal objects or walls. These things cause interference in the Wi-Fi connection.

Step 2

Place your router in a central location of your home. The router should be away from outer walls to avoid interference from other Wi-Fi connections. If you have a two-story home and use your laptop or mobile device on both stories, place the wireless router on the first floor of your home on a high shelf.

Step 3

Replace your router's antenna if your router has to be near an outer wall of your home. The original antennas on routers send a signal in all directions. Removing your current antenna and replacing it with one that sends the signal in only one direction will create a better Wi-Fi connection and increase speed.

Step 4

Use a wireless repeater if you have a large home. Wireless repeaters extend the wireless network so that you will have faster Wi-Fi speeds in longer ranges.

Step 5

Replace other electronics that run off the same frequency as your router. A lot of electronics run off of 2.4 GHz. Look for items that use 5.8 GHz instead. This will eliminate interference with your Wi-Fi speed.

Step 6

Read your router's manual on how to locate wireless channels. Other Wi-Fi connections in your neighborhood may be using the same channel. Changing to a less-used channel will increase Wi-Fi speed.

Step 7

Upgrade your wireless equipment if it is outdated. When you are shopping for a new router and network adapter, choose Wireless N over others. Wireless N will create the fastest Wi-Fi.
