One of the benefits of Time Warner digital cable TV is the ability to receive a wide variety of programming in high definition (HD). For viewers with an HDTV set, HD programming provides a sharper, more detailed picture than standard definition (SD) television. With the proper equipment and connections, you can take advantage of the different HD options available from Time Warner.
HDTV
Television programming is created and broadcast at different image resolutions. Resolution is measured by the number of lines used to create the image, both horizontally and vertically. Standard resolution is 640 x 480 lines, while HD has either 1280 x 720 or 1920 x 1080 lines. Images are also transmitted using an interlaced or progressive-scan format, which, when combined with the number of vertical lines, creates the shorthand terms such as 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p, with everything at 720p or higher considered HD.
Equipment
To receive HD programming from Time Warner, you must subscribe to their HD programming package and lease an HD receiver or DVR set-top box, or obtain a CableCARD to insert into the CableCARD slot of a digital cable-ready HDTV. To view TV shows, movies and other content in HD resolution, you must connect the receiver/DVR to your HDTV using either HDMI or component video cables, which are the two types of cable that support HD video.
Channels
Time Warner offers local and regional channels, cable-based networks, On-Demand and pay-per-view content in HD with their HD programming package. The HD channels are grouped together in tiers, as are the other channels, and viewers have the choice between watching the HD channels or their SD counterparts, located on the lower tiers. Actual channels offered in HD may vary based on the channels available in your particular market and the total bandwidth possible based on the cable infrastructure in place in your community.
Pricing
Time Warner Cable charges a monthly fee above that of the standard digital cable package to receive the HD channels, and for leasing the receiver/DVR or CableCARD. Contact your local Time Warner office for prices and fees charged in your city of residence for the HD service, as well as for other services offered by Time Warner.
