When you pay for a broadband connection like DSL, you expect broadband speeds. If you have a DSL Internet connection that isn't performing at the advertised speeds, or to your expectations of those speeds, then you can try to improve the performance of the modem. Try a number of different things, both with your computer and with your networking equipment, to improve your DSL performance before you resort to purchasing a faster plan.
Step 1
Run regular anti-virus and anti-malware scans on all computers using the DSL modem. Malicious software can rob your computer and Internet connection of performance. If you don't have security software currently installed, check with your ISP. Depending on the ISP they may offer free or discounted security software to their subscribers.
Step 2
Contact your ISP. Ask them to run a speed test. This test can help you determine the source of any faults in your connection, and whether they originate at your ISP at at your location.
Step 3
Reset network equipment like the modem and any routers in use if you notice any slowdown in speed. If your networking hardware is experiencing any difficulties, this reset may resolve them.
Step 4
Install DSL line filters on any other telephone jacks in your house or office that use the same line as the DSL modem. Plug the line filter in the phone jack, and then plug your devices into the line filter. These get rid of any interference from these other devices that may be robbing your modem of its top speeds.
Tips & Warnings
- If you have the technical knowledge, consider installing a pots-splitter into your Network Interface Device. This is where your telephone line comes into your house. If you do this, you should also consider moving your modem closer to this location as well (See Resource 1). Also consider purchasing a faster DSL plan from your provider, if these other measures don't improve the performance to your desires.
- Avoid connecting your DSL modem to the line filter, as it will completely filter out the DSL frequency, eliminating your connection.
