Does a Modem & Router Come With DSL Service?

The vast majority of DSL service providers will supply you with a DSL modem and line filters when you subscribe. The line filters, which go between your current landline telephones and the wall outlet, are easy to install and prevent the DSL signal from interfering with your phone calls. The DSL modem is also very easy to install. Many DSL providers will send a service technician to your home to install your DSL package for you, but if you choose to do it yourself, the modem will come with easy to follow instructions. Basic modems come with a single Ethernet output and a short Ethernet cable for connecting to a router.

While your DSL modem may have been included in the service agreement, routers are generally something you must purchase on your own. A router will allow you to connect multiple computers to the Internet through your modem, either through an Ethernet cable or a wireless signal, depending on the type of router. Some DSL service providers may give you the option of renting a combination modem and wireless router, or even just a standalone router, for a low monthly cost. You may prefer to buy your own, as the monthly rental cost could add up over time to more than the price of a new router.

Even though modems are generally included for free with a DSL package, there may be some DSL providers that charge a monthly rental or equipment fee for the use of the modem. This fee can vary depending on the provider. Routers can range in greatly in price, though the more expensive routers have advanced features that you may find unnecessary. Some routers are designed to support more computers and devices than others. If you have multiple computers and Internet-enabled devices in your household, you'll need a router capable of supporting them all.

If your DSL modem is defective or stops working, the majority of DSL providers will replace it for free as long as you return the original modem to them. If you cancel your DSL subscription or your contract expires, you will be charged for the full cost of the modem unless you return it to your DSL service provider.
