How Do I Set Up a Computer Router With a Cable Connection?

by Joshua Benjamin, Demand Media

A router is a small electronic device that splits the Internet signal provided by your cable modem so that several computers can connect to a single connection source. Most routers aren't plug-and-play, however, and will require at least some amount of configuration before you can connect them to Internet-capable devices. Fortunately, most routers set up in the same manner, so once you know how to configure one you can generally configure them all.

Step 1

Unplug your cable modem from its power supply. The modem needs to be off when you plug in the router for both devices to configure themselves correctly.

Step 2

Plug one end of your Ethernet cable into the "In" or "Modem" port on the back of your router, and then plug the other end into the Ethernet port on your computer.

Step 3

Plug the power supply cord into the router and plug the supply into the wall.

Step 4

Launch your Web browser on your computer.

Step 5

Type your router's Internet Protocol address into your browser's address bar and press "Enter." You can consult your router's documentation to find the IP address. A common IP address is 192.168.1.1.

Step 6

Configure your router according to your product's documentation, as the process varies per router. Usually this will involve doing a "quick connect" procedure, then setting up a security password if desired.

Step 7

Disconnect the Ethernet cable from your computer and unplug the router from the power supply.

Step 8

Plug the Ethernet cable into the "Out" or "Ethernet" port on your cable modem. Plug one end of the second Ethernet cable into the Ethernet port on the computer and one of the "LAN" or "Wired" ports on the back of the router. Connect the power to both the router and the modem. Wait until the lights have finished blinking and glow a solid green on both devices. Your router will now be able to connect multiple devices to the Internet through your single cable modem's connection.
