Accessing broadband Internet in the UK involves performing research on providers to determine which provider will be best for you. Multiple providers can cover the same geographic area, and deals can be competitive. If you are already accessing broadband through a provider and want to access through a different provider, you will need to obtain a Migration Authorization Code to switch smoothly. Many of these steps can be performed using the Internet.

Step 1

Research deals on broadband by checking local evening newspapers, other local media and monitoring television advertising. In addition, an independent regulatory and competition authority for the UK communications industries, called Ofcom, is helpful for broadband research. The Ofcom website includes data on the most complained about broadband services and gives recent totals of complaints per 1,000 customers for broadband providers with a market share of 5 percent or above.

Step 2

Monitor price comparison websites. Some websites have had their price comparison calculators accredited by Ofcom. Accredited broadband comparison sites include Broadbandchoices.co.uk and Broadband.co.uk.

Step 3

Obtain a Migration Authorization Code, often called a MAC code, from the broadband provider you want to leave. Then present the MAC code to the new broadband provider you want to access. Doing this should allow for a seamless transfer with little access disruption.
