When you subscribe to this service, AT&T; provides you with a DSL modem compatible with its network. You may be given the choice of using your own modem, or you may need to replace your old one.
2Wire DSL Gateway
If you purchase AT&T;'s high-speed Internet DSL service, you may receive the 2Wire DSL Gateway 2701HG-B. This device acts as both a modem and a network hub. It comes automatically configured for AT&T;'s Internet service. It has four Ethernet ports for wired connections, such as desktop computers. The 2701HG-B can also create a wireless "G" network through its 802.11g Wi-Fi capability. At the time of publication, AT&T; offers the 2701HB-B without DSL line filters for $100.
Motorola DSL Modem
Depending on your AT&T; high-speed Internet package, you may receive the 2210 DSL modem manufactured by Motorola. This device is a modem only, providing no gateway functions. This means if you want to share the connection across multiple computers, you must use a networking device, such as a router. AT&T; provides full customer support for this modem. It offers one Ethernet port for connection to a computer or router. At the time of publication, AT&T; offers this device for $75.
Westell DSL Modem
Depending on your area and package, AT&T; may provide you with the F90-6100 DSL modem by Westell. AT&T; customer service offers full support for this product. This modem does not provide networking capability, meaning that a router or hub is required for home networking. It supports ADSL, ADSL2 and ADSL2+ connections through its single Ethernet port. This port supports 10/100Base-T connections with an auto-crossover feature. At the time of publication, AT&T; offers this modem for $75.
Other Considerations
When getting a modem for high-speed Internet service from AT&T;, you need to keep some considerations in mind. The first is location. The 2Wire gateway doesn't have location restrictions. The Motorola 2210 is available for use in Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, Wisconsin, Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Tennessee and South Carolina.
