DSL Internet service is digital Internet delivered via traditional copper phone lines and wires. DSL is broadband Internet and works much faster than dial-up service. To connect to DSL, customers must have a modem installed in their home. AT&T; authorizes a number of different modems for its DSL Internet service.
Gateways
The default modem for AT&T; DSL Internet is called a "Gateway" by AT&T;, but is technically called a 2Wire DSL Gateway Model 2701HG-B. The Gateway is both a modem and a router, meaning it allows multiple computers to connect to the Internet. It is able to connect those computers using either an Ethernet cord or a home wireless connection.
Other Modems
There are several other modems which are also compatible with AT&T;'s DSL Internet service. These include the Motorola DSL Modem Model 2210, which can connect only one computer and is not equipped for home wireless connection. This modem is available in two different versions specific to different geographic regions served by AT&T.; Also compatible is the Westell DSL Modem Model F90-6100, which also connects only one computer and is not equipped for wireless connections. Other modem brands may be compatible with AT&T; DSL, but are not endorsed by the company.
How to Get One
AT&T; often provides modems, usually a "Gateway," free when customers sign up for DSL service. If you do not receive such an offer, you can purchase a modem of your choice using AT&T;'s website. Modems for AT&T; DSL are also available through electronics retailers, both online and at traditional brick-and-mortar stores, including Amazon.com, Best Buy, and Walmart.
Accessories
If you would like to use your modem to power more than one computer or if you would like your in-home network to operate wireless and your modem does not have these features, you will need a router or wireless router. Routers, like modems, are available through AT&T;'s website or through electronics retailers.
