AT&T U-verse Vs. Time Warner Cable & Roadrunner

U-Verse a fiber-optic network that connects digital television, landline telephone and Internet service through a central "brain" called the Wireless Gateway. It is offered by AT&T;, the country's largest provider of landline telephone service. Time Warner Cable is the second largest cable company in the U.S. In addition to digital cable, the company offers landline telephone service and high-speed Roadrunner Internet service.

Television Services

AT&T;'s U-Verse offers several digital cable service package options that range from basic local cable channels to premium packages with 410 channels or more. HD and 3-D access, DVR service and sports, international broadcasts and movie channels are all available as add-ons. The Wireless Gateway makes it possible to watch digitally recorded programs on any television in the house. Time Warner offers highly customizable digital cable packages, with several channel bundles, DVR, On Demand programming, parental controls and HDTV. An application that allows you to watch Time Warner digital cable on your iPad is also available.

Internet Services

U-Verse's Wireless Gateway connects your Internet service to your cable service and allows you to remotely control your DVR as well as Wi-Fi enabled devices, such as networked digital cameras and printers. It is available in several download speeds from 3 Mbps to 24 Mbps. All service plans come with an Internet security suite that protects your computer from identity thieves and viruses. Road Runner Internet services work through a high speed cable modem that connects to Time Warner Cable's fiber-optic network and provides you with download speeds suitable for any needs, from emailing and social networking to online conferencing and streaming video. Road Runner also offers PowerBoost, an extra burst of speed which helps you download large files quickly. Additionally, Time Warner Cable offers mobile Internet service, which allows you to connect to the Internet wherever 3G and 4G enabled devices have service.

Phone Services

U-Verse allows customers to check voice mail remotely from a smartphone or computer, and listen to messages in any order. Nationwide calling plans are available with 250 or unlimited anytime minutes, and all plans include caller ID, call waiting and other standard features. The Wireless Gateway is also equipped with an emergency telephone backup battery. Time Warner Cable also allows you to check your voicemail remotely and visually on your computer. Nationwide, continentwide and international calling plans are available, and all plans include features such as caller ID, call waiting and the ability to set up distinctive ring tones for specific people.

Availability

AT&T; U-verse is available in areas across the country. To find out if it is available in your area, you must visit the website and enter your home address because AT&T; has not published a map of its service areas. Time Warner Cable and Roadrunner services are available in 26 states, including California, Texas, New York and Pennsylvania.
